<p>Disclosed is a polyarylene copolymer containing a sulfonic acid group, which has high proton conductivity and excellent methanol resistance. Also disclosed are a solid polymer electrolyte and a proton conducting membrane, each is made of such a copolymer. Specifically disclosed is an aromatic compound which is characterized by being represented by the following formula (1).
