<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable compressor wherein such CO<SB>2</SB>refrigerant is used that has a relatively smaller global-warming-potential and does not cause ozone-depletion, and return of oil is improved. <P>SOLUTION: The compressor using CO<SB>2</SB>as refrigerant includes a tightly closed vessel 1, an axial-gap type motor 3 which is placed in the tightly closed vessel 1 and has a rotor 50 held in the vessel 1 and fixed on a rotating shaft 4, and stators 60A, 60B axially facing to each other through an air-gap in the axial direction of the rotor 50. A compression mechanism part 2 is placed in the tightly closed vessel 1, and driven by the motor 3 via the rotating shaft 4. Between back yoke 63 of the stators 60A, 60B and the inside wall of the tightly closed vessel 1, a stator perimeter path 63b is provided to establish communication through the spaces on axially both sides of the motor 3.
