PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine with a variable valve train capable of restraining increase of excessive friction while preventing occurring of pumping up of a hydraulic lash adjuster. SOLUTION: Maximum loads P1max, P2max are set so that a first engine speed N1 is lower than a second engine speed N2 wherein the first speed N1 is a critical speed of an inertial force F2 of the variable valve train to exceed the maximum load P2max of a lost motion spring and the second engine speed N2 is a critical speed of an inertial force F1 of a valve and a rocker arm to exceed a maximum load P1max of a valve spring.
