The method involves determining relative speed and/or distance between a vehicle i.e. motor vehicle (1) e.g. truck, and a preceding vehicle by a sensor, and automatically determining vehicle situation adapted to a traffic situation under consideration of the determined relative speed or distance adapted to the traffic situation. The vehicle guidance adapted to the traffic situation is determined such that a safety distance before the vehicle is determined under consideration of determined relative velocities and/or distances and the vehicle proper speed if necessary. An independent claim is also included for a driver assisting system for assisting of the vehicle driver during a vehicle guidance adapted to the traffic situation.
