<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To producing molten iron with high productivity and at a low cost, in a method for producing molten iron, for which iron-based scrap is used as raw material and a vertical-type scrap melting furnace is used. <P>SOLUTION: In the method where the iron-based scrap and the coke, are charged from the furnace top part and hot-blast is blown from a plurality of tuyeres at the lower part of the furnace to melt the iron-based scrap with combustion heat of coke, the hot-blast is blown from the tuyeres under conditions satisfying Vh≤220, L≤0.7, 35.7×P≤Vh+50×L≤85.7×D, wherein, Vh (Nm/sec): Hot-blast flowing speed at the tip end part of the tuyere, L (m): Length at the tuyere tube portion projected into the furnace from the inner wall of the furnace, and D (m): the inner diameter of the furnace at the position in the tuyere height. The gas flowing at the whole zone in the furnace diameter containing the center part of the furnace, is optimized, and the composition of the coke and the melting of the iron-based scrap are suitably performed in the whole furnace.
