<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner of high safety capable of avoiding such a fault that the pressure of a refrigerant flowing through an existing pipe exceeds the design pressure of the existing pipe. <P>SOLUTION: The rotating speed of a compressor 1 is controlled so that the pressure of the refrigerant discharged from the compressor 1 does not exceed a limiting set value corresponding to the design pressure of a liquid side crossover pipe 11 and gas side crossover pipe 16. If a liquid side high pressure switch SW2 or a gas side high pressure switch SW 3 is actuated in spite of this control, a main relay 52 is de-energized. When the main relay 52 is de-energized, photocouplers 66, 76 are switched off through a third relay, and a first relay 64 and a second relay 74 are energized.
