PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the measurement accuracy of the lubricating characteristics of a wet lubricant by measuring fine changes in a sample member used in the measurement of the lubricating characteristics of the wet lubricant, and to improve the detection accuracy of the abrasion of the sample member. SOLUTION: Load is applied to a sample member 2 grasped in the wet lubricant 4 by a pair of grasping members 3 and the applied load is successively increased, while making the sample member 2 rotate. AE wave (acoustic wave), produced from the sample member 2 during this period, is measured by an AE-wave measuring means 50 and the waveform of the AE wave is analyzed by a control means 40 and a PC 53, and fine changes produced in the surface layer of the sample member 2 are measured on the basis of a change in the waveform, to discriminate the abrasion of the sample member 2. A a result, abrasion such as initial abrasion, produced in the sample member 2, is detected and the lubricating characteristics of the wet lubricant 4 are grasped on the basis of the detection result.
