A protection circuit of a secondary cell and a method for controlling the same are provided to control charging and discharging operations of the secondary cell by determining deterioration of the secondary cell according to an accumulated current amount of the secondary cell. A protection circuit of a secondary cell(Cell) includes sensing units(R1,R2), a microcontroller(21), and a switch(22). The sensing units sense current of the secondary cell. The microcontroller measures the sensed current of the secondary cell, compares an accumulated current amount with a reference current amount, and outputs a switch control signal according to the comparison result to control charging and discharging modes of the secondary cell. The switch selectively conducts or interrupts a current flow of the secondary cell according to the switch control signal.
