An apparatus and a method for controlling drive speed according to input power source in an external drive are provided to sense electric power inputted from the external drive so as to operate the drive at the current play/recording speed when power is inputted through an adapter and reduce the play/recording speed when USB power is inputted. An apparatus for controlling drive speed according to input power source in an external drive comprises an optical disk(20), a spindle motor(21), an optical pickup(22), a motor drive(23), a digital signal processor(24), a microcomputer(25), a memory(26), and a USB IC block(27). The microcomputer controls the digital signal processor, operates the motor drive, and operates the spindle motor and a slade motor. The slade motor transfers the optical pickup. The optical pickup reads out data stored in the optical disk. A data signal is transmitted to a PC connected with the external drive. The microcomputer reads out a pre-stored prediction current information and controls speed of the drive to be driven under the prediction current.
