A fluid sampling system for retrieving a virgin formation fluid sample from a contaminated zone is disclosed. The system comprises a sample inlet 36 and first and second guard inlets 38. 40 positioned adjacent to the sample inlet. The guard inlets draw down formation fluid from the contaminated zone, allowing the centrally located sample inlet to access the virgin fluid. The system further comprises a cleanup flowline 54b, 54c, 58 connected to the guard inlets, and an evaluation flowline 54a, 52 connected to the sample inlet for transporting the sample fluid to a sample chamber. The guard and sample inlets may be provided with individual extension mechanisms for bringing the inlets into contact with the borehole wall, and packers may surround the outer periphery of the individual inlets. Further, the inlets may be located on the arm of a stabiliser 32. The sample inlet may have an oval shaped cross-sectional profile. |
