A method and an apparatus for searching for a channel signal in a mobile communication system are provided to synchronize timings at high speed by capturing forward channel data in a memory and searching for the channel signal using the forward channel data. An apparatus for searching for a channel signal in a mobile communication system includes a capture device(100), a searcher(200), and a controller(300). The capture device captures a predetermined period of a received forward channel signal and stores the captured signal in a memory. The searcher correlates a mask with a variable offset with the captured channel data and searches for a synchronous point. The controller provides a capturing command and a capturing position to the capture device and provides search reference information to the searcher.
