A method for surveying a wellbore 16 includes deploying a deployable wellbore survey tool 32b into the wellbore, collecting survey data as the deployable survey tool traverses the wellbore, and determining wellbore position information based on the survey data. In one example the method may include landing the deployable wellbore survey tool on a component of a bottom hole assembly. The survey data may be combined with the known location of the wellhead so as to improve the accuracy of the position information of the wellbore. A retrieval tool may be deployed and connected to the survey tool and survey data collected during the ascent of the survey tool. A second survey tool may be deployed a latched to the first survey tool.
