A shift register is provided to prevent the degradation of pull-down switching elements by periodically charging and discharging a reset node during a non-output period. A shift register includes plural stages for outputting scan pulses through an output terminal. Each of the stages includes a node controller, pull-up and pull-down switching elements(Trpu,Trpd), and a coupling removing unit(CR). The node controller controls the charge and discharge of reset and set nodes. The pull-up switching element is controlled by a signal, which is supplied to the set node, and connected to a scan clock transmission line for transmitting scan pulses and the output terminal. The pull-down switching element is controlled by a control signal from outside and connected between a discharge power line for transmitting discharge voltage and the output terminal. The coupling removing unit charges and discharges periodically the reset node during a non-output period of the stage and charges the reset node before supplying an active scan clock pulse to the pull-up switching element during the non-output period.
