6-acylamino-penicillanic acids are produced by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid in an aqueous medium with carboxylic acid derivatives in the presence of bacteria or extracts, enzymes or enzyme concentrates obtained from these bacteria which are capable of linking phenylacetic acid in an amide-like manner with the amino-group of 6-aminopenicillanic acid, there being used as derivatives of carboxylic acids their esters with hydroxy or mercapto compounds, the reaction being carried out at a pH of 4-8. The carboxylic acid derivative may be phenylacetic acid thiophenol ester, phenoxyacetic acid methyl ester, a -phenoxy-proprionylthioglycollic acid, o-chloro-phenoxy - acetyl-thioglycollic acid amide, p-chlorophenoxy-acetyl-thioglycollic acid sodium salt, p-methoxyphenoxyacethyl-thioglycollic acid, 2,6-dichlorophenoxyacetyl - thioglycollic acid, p-nitrophenoxy p - acetyl thioglycollic acid, o-chlorophenoxy acetic acid phenyl ester, o-chlorophenoxyacetyl glycollic acid, a -phenoxypropionyl-b -thiopropionic acid or diphenoxyacetyl glycollic acid, which may be reacted in the presence of a culture of E. coli ATCC 11105. 6-acylaminopenicillanic acids produced in the examples are a -methylphenoxyacetyl-, a - chlorophenoxyacetyl-, p - methoxyphenoxyacetyl-, 2, 6- dichlorophenoxyacetyl-, p - nitrophenoxyacetyl-, o-chlorophenoxyacetyl- and diphenoxyacetyl-6-amino-penicillanic acid. a -Phenoxypropionyl - thioglycollic acid is prepared by reacting a -phenoxypropionic acid chloride with thioglycollic acid. The o-chlorophenoxyacetyl-, p-methoxyphenoxyacetyl-, 2,6-dichlorophenoxy acetyl-, p - nitrophenoxyacetyl- and diphenoxyacetyl-thioglycollic acids may be prepared similarly. The phenyl ester of o-chlorphenoxy acetic acid is prepared by reacting o-chlorphenoxy acetyl chloride with sodium phenoxide. o-Chlorophenoxyacetyl glycollic acid may be obtained by reacting the triethylamine salt of glycollic acid with 2-chlorophenoxy acetyl chloride or by reacting glycollic acid tertiarybutyl ester with 2-chloro-phenoxyacetyl chloride and then thermally decomposing the 2-chloro-phenoxy-acetyl glycollic acid tert.-butyl ester formed. a -Phenoxy-propionyl - b -thiopropionic acid may be prepared by reacting the disodium salt of b -mercaptopropionic acid with a -phenoxypropionyl chloride.
