The method involves providing a measuring signal, which represents a condition of a drive unit (4), and controlling the drive unit for a predetermined time duration. The measuring signal is detected during the time of controlling the drive unit. A loading torque is determined from the measuring signal according to an engine model. Information about occupancy weight of a seat unit of a motor vehicle seat (2) is determined depending on the loading torque. Information about an engine condition is determined as the measuring signal. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining occupancy weight of a vehicle seat.
