A method for controlling program updating and automatic channel tuning in a digital broadcast receiver is provided to prevent a broadcast frequency band from being scanned from the beginning to perform automatic channel tuning operation after a program updating using an OTA channel is completed. A microcomputer sets an OTA channel search mode(S10). The microcomputer gradually scans the entire broadcast frequency bands(S11) to search an OTA channel and simultaneously perform an automatic channel tuning operation(S12). When an OTA channel is searched(S13), the microcomputer temporarily stops the automatic channel tuning operation(S14), searches an ID and version information of an application program included in a header of the application program received via the OTA channel and compares them with an ID and version information of the application program previously stored in a memory. If the version of the received application program is higher, the microcomputer performs program updating operation(S15). When the program updating operation is completed(S16), the microcomputer resumes the temporarily stopped automatic channel tuning operation successively(S17).
