The burner (3) has a combustion chamber (11) defined by a supply wall (10) and a cross-flow heat exchanger (4). The wall has a bypass zone (14) with bypass openings (19) for supplying the chamber with bypass gas. The bypass zone is arranged in a section of the wall, where the section is assigned to a region (25) of the heat exchanger joined to primary and secondary paths (20, 21) of the heat exchanger so that the bypass gas or a bypass gas-burner-exhaust gas mixture is supplied to the region of the heat exchanger in operation of the burner.
