A method for forcibly upgrading a system software program in a digital broadcast receiver is provided to prevent a critical system error because a system software program for upgrading a system fails to be downloaded and upgraded due to a user input. When a system software program is received while a digital broadcast signal is being received(S10,S11), a microcomputer checks whether a forcible SSU(System Software Upgrade) mode has been set(S12). If the forcible SSU mode has not been set, the microcomputer searches a specific ID and version information of the system software program included in a header part of the system software program and compares it with ID and version information of the system software program stored in a memory(S13). If the IDs are identical and the version is higher(S14), the microcomputer outputs an OSD image of a guidance message requesting a user input. When a user designates system upgrading, a corresponding user input is received(S15). When upgrading is requested(S16), the microcomputer downloads a system software program of a new version to the memory and updates a system(S17).
