A vacuum cleaner is provided to compress dust stored in a dust collecting unit to increase the capacity, and prevent scattering of dust while it is discharged from the dust collecting unit. A vacuum cleaner comprises a dust separation unit, a dust storage unit(214), a compression member(260), a driving unit, and a guide rib(220). The dust storage unit is rotatable in the dust storage unit. The driving unit rotates the compression member. The guide rib is spirally formed in the dust storage unit with respect to a rotating shaft of the compression member. The compression member moves along the guide rib, and dust stored in the dust storage unit is compressed while it moves along the guide rib.
