DETERMINING METHOD OF BLOCK MODE, AND THE APPARATUS THEREFOR VIDEO ENCODING

A block mode determining method for video encoding, and an apparatus therefor are provided to determine various macro block modes in an early stage according to a degree of block size activity by using the history characteristic of block size for a prior macroblock, thereby reducing the amount of motion estimation and rate-distortion operation required to a macroblock mode selection process significantly to reduce the entire complexity of an encoding system greatly. A macroblock mode determiner(210) comprises a block determiner(220), a substitute mode estimator(230), and a block mode selector(240). The block determiner compares a predetermined LBHM(Large Block History Map) value with a predetermined threshold value to determine a degree of the block size activity of an inputted macroblock. The substitute mode estimator selects only a part of block modes which the macroblock can have according to the degree of the block size activity. The block mode selector calculates motion estimation and rate-distortion values for available substitute modes selected from the substitute mode estimator to determine the optimal macroblock mode.
