The inner casing (10) is pulled through a pipe (40), while an outer casing (50) is pulled over a caliber disc (60) at the exit of the pipe and over the inner casing to form a combination of casings. The combination is pulled into a shirring horn (100) via feeding cylinders (110) of the shirring machine (70), and is then shirred to produce a compact tube. The tube is cut into sticks or caterpillars of given lengths. An independent claim is also included for a composite casing shirred to a stick.
