The engine has a cylinder head (2) including an intake pipe (6) for supplying an intake gas i.e. fresh air, to a combustion chamber and an exhaust pipe (8) for discharging an exhaust gas from the chamber. The head has a passage (10) placed adjacent to a cylinder (4) and opened in the cylinder to pass combustion and exhaust gases. A derivation unit (20) is movable among intake, exhaust and intermediate positions. The unit connects the passage to the pipe (6), the pipe (8) and to the pipes (6, 8) when the unit is in the intake, exhaust and intermediate positions, respectively.
