An apparatus and a method for providing traffic safety information are provided to prevent accidents in advance by servicing traffic information in a danger area using a DSRC scheme. An apparatus for providing traffic safety information includes a GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver(210), a controller(250), a DSRC transceiver(240), and a GIS(Geographic Information System) storing unit(230). The GNSS receiver receives a satellite signal having position information from satellites. The controller generates first position information based on the satellite signal and generates first traffic safety information having self position information and vehicle information according to the first position information related to a danger area. The DSRC(Dedicated Short Range Communication) transceiver transmits first traffic safety information through DSRC and receives position information and vehicle information of a vehicle positioned in the danger area. The GIS storing unit stores at least one of map information, DSRC area information, danger area information, and reference coordinates information. The controller identifies whether the first position information includes information on the danger area using information stored in the GIS storing unit. |
