PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto-tensioner which stably operates even when a force acts axially orthogonally on a projection from a housing. SOLUTION: In a bottomed cylindrical housing 10 having one open end, a bottomed cylindrical plunger 12 with an opening toward the bottom 11 of the housing is axially slidably inserted with the one end protruded from the housing. In the housing, oil is sealed by an annular sealing member 16 built in between the periphery of the plunger and the inside periphery of the housing. A screw rod 20 coaxial with the plunger and a nut member 18 to be screwed onto the screw rod are held within the plunger. By a return spring 22 built in between the nut member and the plunger, the plunger and the nut member are urged in the axially oppositional direction, and by a spring 23 built in between the screw rod and the bottom of the housing, the screw rod is urged in the axially oppositional direction so as to bring the end face 25 of the screw rod into contact within the plunger.
