PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain stable mechanism motion while ensuring swing cam assembling property. SOLUTION: This variable valve gear for an engine comprises a cam shaft 11 rotated synchronously with a crankshaft of an engine; a swing cam 15 mounted in a relatively displaceable manner to the cam shaft 11 to drive a valve of the engine; a variable valve lift mechanism which changes a valve lift amount by the swing cam 15; and carriers 10A, 10B journaling the outer periphery of the swing cam 15 by vertically divided split bodies. The swing cam 15 is composed of divided bodies radially attachable to and detachable from the cam shaft 11, and the maximum swing range (a turning range shown in Figure 4(B)) A2 of the swing cam 15 is set within a range where a dividing line L1 of the swing cam 15 faces the inner peripheral surface (the peripheral surface of a bearing hole 10G) of one of divided bodies constituting bearing members 10A, 10B.
