The method involves controlling a drive unit (1) by a control variable (A) depending on a given output variable. The control variable is limited in a sense of the selected limitation for the output variable. The permissible maximum value is determined depending on given maximum value for the control variable. The control variable is limited on the permissible maximum value. The maximum value for the control variable is selected depending on operating condition of the drive unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for execution of the method (2) an electronic storage medium in which computer program is stored for execution of the method (3) a control device for a drive unit, particularly an internal combustion engine of a vehicle.
