PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of keeping the tension of an endless belt constant by a simple configuration regardless of variation in the circumferential length of the belt. SOLUTION: A tension varying mechanism 23 for adjusting the tension of the intermediate transfer belt 8 by changing the pressure contact force of the tension roller 20 is disposed in a transfer frame 21 in the main body of the apparatus. The tension varying mechanism 23 includes a compression spring 25 that brings the tension roller 20 into pressure contact with the intermediate transfer belt 8, and a spring receiving member 27 capable of adjusting the compression length of the compression spring 25.
