PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily match control of exposure starting timing by an electronic shutter to traveling characteristics of a rear curtain of a mechanical shutter when exposure control is performed using an electronic front curtain and the mechanical rear curtain. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is equipped with: an imaging device; the mechanical shutter having a shutter curtain which shields light from an object and made incident on the imaging device; a reset part which resets electric charges accumulated in the imaging device; a first control part which controls the mechanical shutter and the reset part so that a state in which a part inside an imaging surface of the imaging device is not exposed by precedence of traveling of the shutter curtain to a reset operation while the shutter curtain travels and a state in which a part inside the imaging surface of the imaging device is exposed by precedence of the rest operation to traveling of the shutter curtain are generated; a detection part which detects the traveling characteristics of the shutter curtain based on an image which has been photoelectrically converted at a state in which a part inside the imaging surface is exposed and a part inside the imaging surface is not exposed; and a second control part which controls the reset operation of the reset part according to the detected traveling characteristics of the shutter curtain.
