Control system comprises a first control unit (5) for controlling cylinders (3) of a first cylinder group (2) to produce a first partial torque and a second control unit (6) for controlling cylinders (3) of a second cylinder group (4) to produce a second partial torque. The cylinders of the cylinder groups are controlled in such a way that a total driving torque is formed from the different partial torques. A communication system (7) is arranged between the control units. An independent claim is also included for a method for switching between engine operational states using the above control system.
