PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small projection type display unit capable of preventing the overlapping of the optical path of an incident light on that of an outgoing light in a reflection type light valve and providing high-picture-quality projection images. SOLUTION: A projection type display unit includes an illuminating optical system 2 for forming an illuminating light from light emitted from a light source 1, the reflection type light valve 6 for reflecting the illuminating light and outputting a modulation light that forms an optical image, a projection lens 7 for projecting the formed optical image, and a positive-power lens element 5. Each of the plurality of pixels of the reflection type light valve controls the reflection direction of the illuminating light, to emit the modulation light. The lens element 5 is formed of one planoconvex lens and is disposed between the reflection type light valve and the projection lens so that, with the convex surface directed toward the projection lens, the modulation light from the reflection type light valve passes through the lens element and is made incident upon the projection lens. The lens element and the reflection type light valve are placed under a condition that optical axes are parallel to each other, and a distance is provided between the optical axes so that the light incident upon the projection lens from unnecessary light components of the illuminating light reflected from an optical interface of the lens element is separated from an effective light component of the modulation light.
