PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel oil discriminating method and a fuel oil discriminating apparatus, capable of checking not only a fuel oil for a diesel engine but also an additive thereof in the case the fuel oil is a right light oil or an unright light oil. SOLUTION: The fuel oil discriminating method which determines whether or not another kind of fuel other than a lamp oil and an A-heavy oil is blended in the light oil being the fuel oil, is characterized in that a refractive index and a temperature of an object fuel oil are detected, and the determination is made whether or not another kind of fuel is blended in the light oil, based on the detected refractive index and temperature value of the fuel oil and based on a previously provided determination table P specifying ranges of the right light oil and the fuel oil in which another kind of fuel other than the lamp oil and the A-heavy oil is blended for the refractive index and the temperature of the fuel oil.
