PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately measure nutritive salts ion seawater by separating them into nitrate ions and nitrite ions, in particular, and the other constituents, and by using an ultraviolet absorptiometer, in a method for measuring nutrient salts in seawater while the salts of nitric acid, nitrous acid, ammonia, and phosphoric acid, called as nutrient salts, existing in fresh water or seawater become food for plankton, causing water pollution such as red tides. SOLUTION: As to concentration measurement on seawater nutrient salts by means of absorption photometry, this method and system are provided for measuring the absorption spectra of nitrate ions, nitrite ions, and the other substances, by causing ultraviolet light of a wavelength range of 215 to 240 nm, as wavelengths little affected by chlorine, bromine, etc. to pass through a seawater specimen, by quadratic differentiation of these spectra, and measuring the total concentration of nitrate ions and nitrite ions by an arithmetic means of a least-squares method utilizing a Gaussian functio model.
