A machine (10) includes an electric drive propulsion system (20) including an internal combustion engine (24), an alternator (26), a motor controller (27), and at least one electric motor (28). The machine (10) further includes an electronic controller (22) in communication with the electric drive propulsion system (20). The electronic controller (22) is configured to determine, in chassis (12), and store a lugging horsepower (62) of the engine at a plurality of different engine speeds (64). The machine (10) further includes a memory (30) for storing the lugging horsepower (62) for each of the plurality of different engine speeds (64) corresponding to lug curve data (80). The electronic controller (22) is further configured to affect a control decision based on the lug curve data (80).
