PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent hindrance of productivity after periodical repairs by lowering the temperature of coal to be introduced in performing the periodical repairs in the coke oven in operation by introducing coal heated to high temperatures into a carbonization chamber. SOLUTION: This method of operating a coke oven comprises controlling the heating temperature of the coal to be introduced into the carbonization chamber preferably in accordance with the time to make periodical repairs in controlling the operating rate of the coke oven for producing coke for metallurgy use by introducing coal into the carbonization chamber.
