<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take advantage of a digital driving system and to display an image of a high grade by forming a semiconductor element, such as TFT, by using, for example, an SOQ substrate. <P>SOLUTION: According to the liquid crystal device 1, a driving voltage Vi having a waveform approximate to an ideal waveform can be applied to a liquid crystal of each pixel section according to a potential Vsig of an image signal Sn which is a digital signal having one potential of High and Low for each of a plurality of sub-frames dividing one frame. Accordingly, the liquid crystal can be driven by a driving voltage according to the image signal, and the influence of the light leakage current in the semiconductor element, such as TFT, for pixel switching can be reduced and the image can be displayed at the high grade according to the gradation data included in the image signal.
