PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly check whether or not a spindle motor fails due to short-circuiting in a disk drive. SOLUTION: The disk drive 1 has a spindle motor 3 to turn the disk 2, a differential operational amplifier 5 to detect the voltage difference between positive and negative terminals of the spindle motor 3, a controller 7 for the whole equipment, and a failure determination section 10 to check whether the spindle motor 3 fails or not from the detected voltage. When starting to drive the spindle motor 3 from the state that the disk 2 is at a stop, the differential operational amplifier 5 finds out the detected voltage and outputs it to the failure determination section 10. The failure determination section 10 determines that the spindle motor 3 fails if the detected voltage is lower than the predetermined threshold. The failure determination section 10 can correctly find out whether the spindle motor 3 fails or not by comparing the detected voltage and the threshold. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
