PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly discriminate the media type of an optical disk. SOLUTION: A CPU 21 controls an optical pickup 13 in such a manner that a focus search start position Pstart comes between a DVD layer and a BD layer, and the CPU performs focus down search and focus up search and respectively acquires reflection signs. The CPU 21 discriminates whether the media type of the optical disk is any of a CD, a DVD, a BD and a hybrid disk based on the presence or absence of tracking in the case where tracking is performed by using the number of the reflection signals and the DVD laser.
