<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for performing optimal exposure control and image correction processing. <P>SOLUTION: On the basis of an image captured by an imaging apparatus, an average luminance and a luminance distribution range of a main object are calculated and on the basis of the calculated main object luminance distribution range and the required number of gradations corresponding to the main object, a control target average luminance level of the object is determined. Exposure control is then carried out in such a way that the main object has the control target average luminance level. Furthermore, regarding an object image whose average luminance level is deviated by exposure control, gradation conversion processing is performed thereon for setting the average luminance level to almost the center of output luminance distribution.
