<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of performing smoothing processing that reduces image stripes and preventing an image from being out of focus without making MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) too low. <P>SOLUTION: The image reader has a means for reading a standard white board and preparing shading correction data, and a means for dividing an area in a main scan direction into a plurality of areas.
