PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic device which has a high color purity and is capable of precisely controlling colors and is capable of surely securing a colorless state in a decolored state and suitable for sharp and clear color image display. SOLUTION: In an electrochromic device 10, a pair of electrode structures (a display electrode structure 11 and a counter electrode structure 12) having at least transparent electrodes 2 and 7 formed on supporting substrates 1 and 6 are disposed with an electrolyte layer 5 therebetween so that transparent electrodes face each other, and a porous electrode to which an electrochromic colorant 3 coloring due to oxidation or reduction reaction is adsorbed is formed on the transparent electrode of at least one of the pair of electrode structures, and a porous electrode 8 carrying an organic radical compound 13 wherein a unit having a nitrooxy radical group has a repeated structure is formed on the transparent electrode 7 constituting the counter electrode structure 12.
