PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine capable of suppressing occurrence of excessive temperature rise which may heighten the degree of fear of deterioration to both TWC and LNC during execution of sulfur purge. SOLUTION: This control device (ECU 18) of the internal combustion engine having, for example, TWC 8 and LNC 9 provided in series in an exhaust system, and a regeneration processing means for removing a sulfur portion captured by the LNC is equipped with a TWC temperature sensor 29, an LNC temperature sensor 30, a combustion rich control mode 42 and a post rich control mode 43 for controlling the temperature of the exhaust system, and a control mode selection means 44 for selecting which exhaust system temperature control mode is to be executed based on a relation between outputs from the TWC temperature sensor 29 and the LNC temperature sensor 30.
