PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply measure skeletal muscles without imposing an enormous burden on a subject when measuring the muscle characteristics of the skeletal muscles and measure various types of muscle characteristics in the skeletal muscles. SOLUTION: A vibration detection section 120 detects vibrations generated in the skeletal muscles 210 based on light illuminated from respective light illumination elements 111-1 to 111-n for every light illumination element, and CPU 150 calculates attenuation coefficients (moduli of decay) and acoustic velocity of the respective vibrations based on the vibrations for every light illumination element detected by the vibration detection section 120, and calculates the muscle age and the degree of the trained muscles, or the muscle characteristics of the skeletal muscles 210 based on the calculated attenuation coefficients (moduli of decay) and the acoustic velocity of the respective vibrations.
