Packets are communicated between forwarding contexts (210, 230) (e.g., virtual routers, logical routers, and/or private networks) using virtual interfaces (215, 216, 235, 236) in communications and computin systems, especially routers, packet switching systems, and other devices. A virtual interface (215, 216 235, 236) refers to the interface infrastructure (e.g., buffers, memory locations, other data structures), but does not connect to an external cable or other communications mechanism such as is a physical interface (217, 218, 237, 238). Packets are moved between forwarding contexts (210, 230) by automatically moving a packet placed in a first virtual interface (215) associated with a first forwarding context (210) to a second virtual interface (236) associated with a second forwarding context (230) (assuming the packet is not dropped by a feature applied to the packet at the first virtual interface). |
