Novel laccase mediators, including carboxyamido and cyano derivatives of 2, 6-dimethoxyphenol that exhibit improved hydrolytic stability and good ble aching performance. The novel laccase enzymes may be employed in conjunction with the 2,6-dimethoxyphenol derivatives of this invention to provide an im proved method for bleaching denim fabrics.
