PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rat repellent which has a strong repelling effect against rats, has high safety, and can be produced at a lowered production cost. SOLUTION: This rat repellent contains 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol as an active ingredient. The 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol itself exhibits a high repelling effect, because the 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol can repel rats not only by a taste repelling effect but also by skin irritation and mucous membrane irritation in a small amount of evaporation. Since the 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol has a larger mol. wt. than that of phenol, the 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol does not instantly evaporate and can sustain the necessary repelling effect over a long period of time. Even when a person touches with an article to which the repelling effect is imparted with a filler, a coating or the like containing the 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol, the person does relatively not receive irritation because the 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol hardly evaporates.
