PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cushioning material that can be manufactured easily and at low costs. SOLUTION: The cushioning material 1 is of approximately square cylindrical form for externally enclosing an approximately column-like article having protrusions sticking out to lateral directions, with four side plates 2, 3, 4, 5 of approximately rectangular shape with the longitudinal direction of the column-like article being made the long sides with which the side plates are continuously connected for configuration. Inside the side plates 2 to 5, pairs of locking sections 21, 22; 31, 32; 41, 42; 51, 52 are arranged at intervals in the longitudinal direction, sandwiching a retention area R1 that holds the preceding protrusions, the locking sections engaging with the preceding protrusions when the approximately column-like article is shifted in the longitudinal direction. The locking sections are so formed that folding inside of a part of the side plates 2 to 5 causes the ends of the locking sections to be shifted to inside upon the cushioning material 1 being pressurized in the longitudinal direction, and be shifted to outside upon the cushioning material 1 being extended.
