PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which does not complicate the constitution of a ribbon cartridge, suppresses the number of sensors for detecting the kind of the ribbon cartridge to only one, and can automatically discriminate the kinds of the ribbon cartridge when the ribbon cartridge is mounted. SOLUTION: A mark 29 for discriminating the kinds of the ribbon indicating the kinds of the ribbon cartridge is provided on the ribbon cartridge 22 along the direction moved when the ribbon cartridge 22 is mounted on the printer. While the ribbon cartridge 22 is automatically delivered on a straight line-like delivering locus at a definite speed from a first position on an inserting opening side of the printer to a second position when the mounting is completed by driving forces of driving members 17a and 12a, the detecting sensor 21 detects a mark pattern from the mark 29 to automatically discriminate the kinds of the ink ribbon.
