A display device and a method of controlling the display device are provided to show the performance of a display device having a backlight unit employing light emitting diodes to users to allow the users to recognize the advantages of the backlight unit easily. A display device includes a display unit(33), a backlight unit(40), and a controller(60). The backlight unit irradiates the display unit. The controller controls the backlight unit to irradiate the display unit based on an input image signal and changes color information of the image signal such that the operating state of the backlight unit is displayed on the display unit.
