A microtome cutting assembly comprising a knife holder 1 and blade replacement apparatus wherein a plurality of blades are stored in a blade dispenser 4, the blade in use is clamped by a pressure plate 8 such that the cutting blade edge 7 is exposed. Used blades are stored in blade container 5. Upon an operator's manual action, the clamping action of the pressure plate 8 is released and a new blade is dispensed from the dispenser 4 pushing and thereby displacing the present cutting blade from under the pressure plate and urging it towards the used blade container 5. The blade conveying action is mediated by an entraining element 13 arranged at the end of a locking rod 10 for the knife holder. Preferable features include guides with slide surfaces, a lever actuator and an eccentric arrangement to facilitate the locking action against the pressure plate. Such an arrangement may be suitable for a cryostat. |
