A rotary piston for an internal combustion engine is provided to reduce the amount of an exhaust gas by reducing an imperfect combustion gas and smoke due to gap movement between a piston and a cylinder. A rotary piston for an internal combustion engine includes an upper body(10) and a lower body(20). The upper body and the lower body are coupled to each other and inserted into an inner wall of a cylinder. The upper body is in contact with a cylinder head to form a combustion chamber. The lower body is connected to a connecting rod. As the connecting rod is operated, the upper and lower bodies are vertically moved along the inner wall of the cylinder. A pair of resilient springs(30) connects the upper body to the lower body to recover rotational force between the upper body and the lower body.
